Families planning getaways during the school holidays could cut costs by booking during certain weeks, according to MoneySavingExpert (MSE). Holiday prices typically rocket during school breaks, as heightened demand drives up ticket and hotel prices.
This can prove particularly challenging for families with school-age children, who have little option but to book during term breaks. However, money-saving experts have revealed that some weeks are likely to be more affordable than others, offering better opportunities for budget-conscious families looking for deals.
According to MSE, founded by consumer journalist Martin Lewis, "the last two weeks" of the summer holidays are usually cheaper. Guidance on the website explains: "Generally if you can take a holiday when others can't (such as travelling before the school holidays in May and June to family destinations such as Florida), you'll get a better price.
"If that's not an option, prices for package holidays usually drop rapidly towards the end of August - this is likely to be because most people want to go as soon as they can, according to ABTA. And many people don't want to be away the week before schools go back, so if you can leave it to the very last minute you'll likely save."
For those willing to hold off on booking a holiday, leaving it to the last minute could be another way to secure the best deal. MSE advises that holidaymakers could snap up a bargain by booking as late as possible, or no more than eight to 10 weeks before their departure date, reports the Mirror.
Some families may opt to hold off until the week before they are hoping to travel. While the method might not suit those who lack flexibility with their travel dates, the tip could secure people "dirt-cheap prices."
MSE cautioned that you might need to be careful if you have your heart set on a specific hotel or want certain facilities, such as a creche. But for those who find a bargain, it could be well worth the wait.
One MSE fan named Peach, who shared a success story via Facebook, said they booked seven nights in a Universal Hotel for two children and two adults at £750 each by waiting until three weeks before their departure date. The holidaymaker said the price included flights and transfers from Manchester, booked via a major airline.
Conversely, holidaymakers could find deals by booking well in advance. According to MSE, passengers might be able to get early booking codes that can save up to £100 per couple or include an extra week for free.
Sometimes these discounts could include 'free' child places, so families are advised to shop around for offers. With these deals, availability is usually limited - so booking early could be a plus.
