It's time for Keir Starmer to go: Britain deserves better

For the good of the nation and the millions of people he represents, this Prime Minister must resign. Every single minute he spends holed up inside No 10, desperately trying to cling onto power, is vital time wasted that would be better served on delivering for the citizens of this great country.

If he is the decent, honourable, man Sir Keir Starmer insists he is, then he will do the right thing and stand aside. He owes it to the British electorate. This saga has gone on for far too long. Shamefully, His Majesty King Charles will find himself innocently embroiled in this tawdry Labour charade when he officially opens Parliament on Wednesday.

The King's Speech, in which he outlines the government's plans for legislation, will effectively be worthless if Sir Keir remains at the helm.

His successor, whether it's Andy Burnham, Angela Rayner, Wes Streeting or Ed Miliband, will disown it. Another unsavoury stain on a government led by a man who is no longer in control.

This isn't just some left-wing coup to oust a Prime Minister; every wing of Labour wants him gone. The let-down public do too. More than of his 90 backbench MPs want him to go, four ministers have resigned and the Cabinet is bitterly divided over his future.

Labour has suffered historic election defeats in England, Scotland and Wales and the appalling Peter Mandelson scandal won't go away anytime soon.

As he hides away in his Downing Street bunker, we implore the Prime Minister to take a moment to realise he is the problem. No-one else, but him.

Sir Keir once vowed to voters to "stop the chaos" and arrest national decline.

What we have now is a chaotic Labour Party tearing itself apart because of his repeated failings.

From his shameful decision to snatch the winter fuel payment from pensioners, the cruel family farm tax and the remorseless Brexit reversals to the Chagos surrender and the crippling national insurance hike.

If the current Labour leader is allowed to limp on, this great nation will be left in a perilous state of limbo.

Britain is now threatened with paralysis, potentially for months, while the government is preoccupied with mudslinging and in-fighting.

We face a multitude of deep-seated problems - economic stasis, a terrifying cost of living challenges, the Channel migrant crisis and a ramshackle military - all of which were created or aggravated by this government.

While he tries to save his own job, one million people in the UK are out of work. The social care system is on its knees and the welfare bill continues to balloon. And yet, in a betrayal of the British people, the Labour Party plans to put everything else on hold.

At the very least this will take weeks, months at most.

In reality, a new party leader may not be declared until the run-up to Labour's conference at the end of September.

Whether it's serial loser Burnham - who has tried and failed twice to become Labour leader, Rayner with her murky tax affairs, or Mandelson-pal Streeting - the chances are that whoever replaces Starmer will be equally bad. Probably worse.

One thing is for certain: time has run out, Sir Keir.

Britain deserves better.
