Eileen Wang, the former Mayor of Arcadia, has recently made headlines due to her federal plea agreement, which has brought renewed scrutiny to Yaoning “Mike” Sun. Sun, a political strategist from California, has confessed to serving as an undisclosed agent for the People's Republic of China (PRC). Wang, aged 58, has agreed to plead guilty to charges of acting as an illegal foreign agent, following accusations that she collaborated with Chinese officials from 2020 to 2022 to disseminate pro-Beijing content via a Chinese-American news platform. This case has also underscored her close ties with Sun, who is currently serving a 48-month sentence in federal prison.
Profile of Yaoning “Mike” Sun Who is Yaoning “Mike” Sun?
Yaoning “Mike” Sun, 65, hailing from Chino Hills, California, is a political strategist who admitted guilt in October 2025 for acting as an illegal agent of the PRC without the necessary notification to the US Attorney General, as mandated by the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Federal prosecutors have indicated that Sun operated under the guidance of Chinese government officials from 2022 until January 2024. He is accused of leveraging his political connections to promote Beijing's interests within American political spheres, including serving as a campaign advisor for a successful city council candidate in Southern California in 2022.
Wang collaborated with her then-fiancé, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, to establish a platform called “U.S. News Center,” targeting the Chinese-American demographic. Prosecutors claim this site acted as a propaganda tool directed by PRC officials, with both Wang and Sun publishing articles that favored Beijing and relaying performance metrics back to their Chinese contacts. Court documents further allege that Sun kept tabs on protests and activities related to Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Falun Gong. During Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen’s visit to Southern California in 2023, Sun reportedly sent real-time updates and images to PRC officials. Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg characterized Sun’s actions as a “brazen violation” of US sovereignty, accusing him of disseminating Chinese propaganda and monitoring groups perceived as threats by Beijing. Following her plea agreement, Wang resigned from her position, with prosecutors noting that the actions related to the case occurred before she officially took office in December 2022.
