West Bengal's govt issues major new order on toll gates closure

In a major order, West Bengal's new govt -- led by CM Suvendu Adhikari -- ordered on May 13 that all toll gates and other such toll-collection points that have not been "duly approved/authorised by the competent authority of the Governmet of West Bengal" be shut down with immediate effect.

The order was issued by the state's newly appointed chief secretary Manoj Aggarwal.

As per the official order, district magistrates will first identify such toll gates/drop gates that fall in their jurisdiction, after which these structure will be removed/closed and necessary steps will be taken to prevent their re-establishment.

Collection of charges, fees or any levies at such points will come to a stop right away, the order said.

The official communication further said that "authorised collection points, both legal and illegal, be compiled and submitted to the authories by May 15.

The order will come into effect immediately, it added.
