Today, Sharib Hashmi is widely recognised for his performance as JK Talpade in The Family Man. His comic timing, emotional scenes and chemistry with Manoj Bajpayee made him a fan favourite across the country. But behind the success story lies a long journey filled with financial struggles, self-doubt and years of uncertainty. Before becoming a household name, Sharib spent nearly 15 years trying to survive in the entertainment industry after quitting a stable job at MTV India.

In a recent interview with Hauterrfly, Sharib and his wife Nasreen Hashmi opened up about the difficult years they faced while chasing his dream of becoming an actor.

Leaving a stable MTV job for acting

Before entering films full-time, Sharib worked at MTV India in the early 2000s and reportedly earned around Rs 25,000 every month. At the time, he was already married to Nasreen, and the couple had also become parents.

Sharib admitted that leaving a secure job was one of the toughest decisions of his life. He said he could never have taken that step without his wife’s support. According to him, if Nasreen had asked him not to quit, he would have continued living a regular life focused only on work and stability.

Nasreen, however, believed in his talent from the beginning. During the interview, she shared that she always felt Sharib was hardworking and deserved a chance to follow his dream. She encouraged him to take the risk because she wanted him to be happy doing what he truly loved.

When the struggle became unbearable

Things, however, did not change overnight. The couple spent years dealing with financial problems while Sharib struggled to find consistent work in the industry.

Nasreen revealed that they slowly exhausted all their savings during that phase. She said, “But I was so confident of his talent. And he did work very hard. That’s why I wanted to support him. If you are happy, then do it. I sold my jewellery bit by bit. We couldn’t continue with our house either and had to sell it. Then I had to sell the house from my inheritance. Every time, we got excited by an opportunity, but then an obstacle would crop up."

Sharib did get small opportunities during those years. He appeared briefly in Slumdog Millionaire, the Oscar-winning film directed by Danny Boyle. However, the role did not immediately change his career.

There came a point when the actor reportedly had no money left at all. Sharib recalled sitting outside a mall one day, wondering whom he could call for help during the crisis. Fortunately, one of his old friends from MTV later offered him writing work for the television show Zor Ka Jhatka, hosted by Shah Rukh Khan.

Nasreen also remembered how friends supported them during their toughest days. She said a childhood friend who worked at a grocery store regularly helped them with food supplies when they had no money left. According to her, they somehow managed to survive despite the constant uncertainty.

“Why did you let me quit my job?”

The emotional pressure eventually began affecting Sharib deeply. Nasreen recalled one difficult moment when the actor became extremely disappointed and questioned his own decision.

According to her, Sharib once emotionally asked why she had allowed him to leave his stable MTV job if life was going to become this difficult. She admitted that hearing those words left her heartbroken because the entire family had stood beside him through every struggle.

The situation became even harder when they struggled to pay their children’s school fees. Nasreen said there was a time when she started wondering how much longer they could continue surviving like this while also thinking about their children’s future.

Despite everything, Sharib requested two more years to continue pursuing acting. That decision eventually changed his life forever.

How The Family Man changed everything

After years of setbacks, Sharib finally landed The Family Man, created by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K.. His role as JK Talpade instantly connected with audiences and transformed him into a popular face in Indian OTT entertainment.

Following the success of the series, Sharib started receiving bigger acting opportunities in films and web shows. Over the years, he appeared in projects like Scam 1992, Asur, Fighter, Tarla and Filmistaan.

Nasreen shared that Sharib eventually fulfilled a promise he had made during their difficult years. According to her, he slowly bought back all the jewellery she had sold during the struggle period.

While Sharib’s professional life finally changed for the better, the family later faced another personal challenge after Nasreen was diagnosed with oral cancer. She is currently undergoing treatment, but continues to support Sharib and his acting journey.

Today, Sharib Hashmi’s story is not just about success in films and OTT. He was last seen in The Family Man Season 3 alongside Manoj Bajpayee. Stay tuned!
