The Delhi government has announced the launch of the “Aftercare Scheme for Young Persons”, aimed at supporting young adults transitioning out of child care institutions after they turn 18. The initiative is intended to address challenges faced by vulnerable youth as they move toward independent living.
Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive support in areas such as higher education, vocational training, skill development, counselling, career guidance, and financial assistance. Officials said the programme is designed to help young adults continue their education, improve employability, and access rehabilitation support after leaving institutional care.
According to government estimates, around 150 to 200 young people leave child care institutions in Delhi every year after reaching adulthood. Many face difficulties related to housing, employment, financial stability, and the absence of family support systems. The new programme seeks to bridge that gap through structured assistance and personalised care plans.
The scheme will operate under the framework of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and will be implemented by the Department of Women and Child Development. Reports indicate that the Delhi government has earmarked Rs 3.5 crore for the initiative in the 2026–27 financial year.
Officials stated that beneficiaries may also receive mentoring, emotional support, and help in accessing internships and employment opportunities. Monitoring and assessment mechanisms are expected to be carried out at the district and state levels to evaluate the progress of participants and ensure continued support where required.
