Cricket Gully | May 13, 2026 10:39 PM CST

There is an ugly controversy brewing up at the IPL 2026. As it turns out, there is alleged blackmail of an up-and-coming cricketer involved with the secretary of a big board official. As quoted by sources speaking to CricBlogger, an approaching cricketer was asked for a commission from an approaching IPL deal by the board official's secretary.

The sources also said that the cricketer is adamant that he would not pay what was asked. The situation turned ugly when the secretary apparently started blackmailing the cricketer. According to the reports, things escalated when the secretary apparently teamed up with a journalist and revealed aspects of the cricketer's private life on social media.

Sources further claimed that a large part of the conversations surrounding IPL cricketers on social media have possibly arisen from this row. Meanwhile, there's also a separate report about a female friend of an IPL cricketer having apparently leaked some crucial information to third parties which has further amplified worries in cricket circles.

Board and Franchises Concerned at the Issue

While an attempt to contact board officials were met with silence by the CricBlogger, it is reported that IPL franchise management circles are not only aware of the issue but are also concerned about it.

The question of alleged demands for cash for a chance to play in an IPL squad isn't new; but this seems to be the first incident where a board official's secretary is being implicated.

The issue seems to have extended beyond just IPL cricket as well. Sources said that there are many cases where cricketers are known to forego their entire match fees, in the sport, to officials to represent state sides.

A source told CricBlogger:

"The involvement of unwanted people around cricketers will have to stop somewhere."

BCCI Reportedly Tightening Rules After Allegations

Reports of an internal probe have come from the BCCI due to the fresh allegations leveled. Sources said that the board is of the view that any undue demands or suspected approaches be instantly reported.

It has also been revealed, as reported by CricBlogger, that the preventive aspect has already been debated and new dos and don'ts handed out, and further changes in regulations are expected to follow.

The report revealed further that the board seems to think a larger setup is working on a variety of levels across Indian cricket and in such, the teams and players have been instructed to be wary when dealing with people from outside their set-up.

However, this case seems to bring into focus again issues of players' security and outside influence and transparency in the game, with an official clarification still to be given, it is clear that the board is concerned, as are a number of the teams that are competing in this year's IPL.
