New Delhi: Google has officially announced Android 17 during the Android Show 2026 event, unveiling a range of new artificial intelligence tools, security enhancements and productivity-focused upgrades for Android smartphones.

The latest Android version introduces nine major features designed to improve daily smartphone usage. Google confirmed that Android 17 will first roll out to select Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices before expanding to more Android smartphones later this year.

Redesigned Emoji and Digital Wellbeing Tools

One of the visual highlights of Android 17 is a redesigned emoji collection featuring over 4,000 emoji with a more detailed three-dimensional appearance. The updated emoji set is expected to debut first on Pixel smartphones.

Google has also introduced a new digital well-being feature called Pause Point. The tool allows users to mark distracting applications, triggering a 10-second waiting timer before those apps open. Android additionally suggests breathing exercises and encourages users to switch to more productive tasks. Usage limits for individual sessions can also be customized.

New Features for Creators and File Sharing

Android 17 includes a creator-focused feature called Screen Reactions, allowing users to record both their smartphone screen and selfie camera simultaneously. The feature is aimed at reaction videos, tutorials and commentary content, with the user appearing as a floating cutout over the screen recording.

Google is also expanding Quick Share support to more Android smartphone brands, including Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo and Honor. In a major addition, Android users will be able to share files with iPhone users through QR-code-based transfers linked directly to iCloud storage. Google also plans to bring Quick Share and AirDrop compatibility into apps like WhatsApp later this year.

Easier Switching and AI-Powered Productivity

Android 17 will support Apple’s wireless migration system introduced with iOS 26.3, enabling easier transfer of contacts, files, eSIMs, messages and even homescreen layouts from iPhones to Android devices.

Google also introduced Rambler, an AI-based transcription tool capable of removing filler words, correcting mistakes and supporting multilingual conversations during dictation. Besides this, Android 17 adds AI-generated widgets through a feature called Create My Widget, where users can create customized widgets using natural language prompts.

Security and Gemini Automation Upgrades

The update also expands Gemini-powered automation features, allowing Android devices to assist with tasks such as travel planning, grocery ordering and app automation.

On the security front, Android 17 introduces stronger anti-theft protections, AI-based scam detection, advanced malware scanning and safer APK download verification through Chrome. Remote biometric locking and password protection improvements are also part of the latest update, aimed at strengthening user privacy and device safety.
