HBO Go, the old streaming service that has been discontinued in many markets, will cease operations in Vietnam too on June 15 and be replaced by Netflix competitor HBO Max.

Launched in Vietnam in 2019, HBO Go was designed for cable, satellite and live TV streaming service subscribers who already had HBO’s channels as part of a TV subscription.

It was pulled out of many markets in 2020, with HBO Max being offered in its place, allowing users to watch all HBO content without the need for a cable TV connection.

In Vietnam, even partnerships with local streaming platforms such as TV360 and VieON will be terminated.

TV360 now displays a “Failed” notification when users attempted to subscribe to a new HBO package.

Users, however, for now can still watch HBO content through traditional television channels on cable and satellite services.

An industry analyst, who asked not be identified, thought the move was intended for American studio Warner Bros. to launch HBO Max to compete with Netflix.

The HBO Max homepage also displays a Vietnamese-language notice saying “coming on June 16.”

HBO Go attracted viewers in Vietnam with prominent original series such as Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon and films from the Warner Bros. archives.
