Indian food is famous across the world for its diversity and taste, but is our everyday ‘desi food’ really safe for the heart? Experts believe that unknowingly we are adding such things to our plate which can cause heart diseases. Famous cardiologist Dr. Naveen Bhamri has recently shared information about the food items that can block the arteries of the heart and has told which indigenous options you can choose to keep your heart young.

Remove these 3 things from your diet today (Avoid These)

According to the doctor, these things may taste wonderful, but in the long run they increase the risk of heart attack:

  1. Vegetable Ghee or Dalda: It is considered as ‘slow poison’ for health. It contains abundant amounts of trans fats, which directly harden the arteries of the heart and damage them.

  2. Flour and its products: Foods made from refined flour like white bread, samosa and kachori cause ‘sugar spike’ (sudden increase in sugar level) in the body. It increases inflammation in the body, which is very dangerous for heart health.

  3. Street food and processed food: Eating outside fried or canned food daily causes accumulation of waste in the arteries, which obstructs blood flow.

5 ‘Super Foods’ that strengthen the heart (Eat These)

Dr. Bhamri explains that there are many such options available in the Indian kitchen itself which work like medicine for the heart:

  • Corn bread and mustard greens: It is not only an excellent source of fiber, but it also contains essential proteins and ‘good fats’ that keep cholesterol under control.

  • Pulses: Doctors recommend eating one to two bowls of pulses daily. Pulses are a treasure trove of proteins and healthy fats.

  • Turmeric Milk: The anti-inflammatory properties present in it are helpful in reducing the swelling of the arteries.

  • Buttermilk: It is very beneficial for the digestive system (intestines) as well as heart health.

  • Desi Ghee: Unlike vegetable ghee, consuming pure desi ghee in limited quantities can be beneficial for the heart.

Doctor’s special advice

Heart health is not limited to food only. Dr. Bhamri warns that poor lifestyle and addiction to processed food doubles the risk of heart attack. Never ignore the initial symptoms seen in the body (such as heaviness in the chest or shortness of breath).
