Lifestyle Desk- During the summer season, there is a glut of raw mangoes i.e. Kairi in the markets. Sour curry eaten with salt and pepper, cooling mango panna, flavor enhancing chutney and spicy pickle – summer seems incomplete without raw mango. But for many people this also becomes a taste. After eating, cutting or peeling raw mango, problems like itching in the lips, red rash on the face, swelling or small blisters are seen.

According to doctors, this problem is not caused by the mango pulp but by its peel, juice and sticky substance coming out near the stalk. Some chemicals are found in them which are like allergens present in a plant called poison ivy. This is the reason why many people complain of “allergic contact dermatitis”.

Experts say that white sticky juice comes out near the stalk of raw mango. The elements present in this juice can cause reactions as soon as they come in contact with the skin. This effect is more visible in people whose skin is sensitive. Many times, even just by touching hands, itching and burning sensation starts on the face, lips or neck.

What are its symptoms?

In case of allergy, red rashes, itching, swelling, burning sensation and small blisters may appear on the skin. Some people may also have problems like swollen lips or peeling of the skin. If the allergy worsens then it is important to consult a doctor.

How to protect?

  1. Doctors advise to wash raw mango thoroughly before cutting or peeling it. Cut off a little more of the part near the stalk so that the sticky juice is removed.
  2. People who already have allergy problems can wear gloves while peeling mangoes. Washing hands and face immediately after cutting mango is also considered beneficial.
  3. If you have repeated reactions after eating raw mango, then avoid eating it directly. Such people can take Aam Panna or well-cooked things in limited quantity, because sometimes the allergic effect reduces after cooking or processing.

In summer, raw mango is considered beneficial for both taste and health. Vitamin C, antioxidants and electrolytes are found in abundance in it, which help in protecting the body from heat stroke and dehydration. However, if you experience any skin problem after eating it, then it is important to be careful. By taking a little care, you can enjoy raw mango to the fullest without any hassle.
