Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey on PR Sreejesh allegations Responding to the question, he has said that he has not been removed from the post, rather his tenure had ended in December 2025. The new coach has been selected on the basis of merit. Sreejesh, a two-time Olympic medalist and coach of India’s Under-21 team that won the Junior World Cup bronze medal, took on Hockey India on social media on Wednesday (May 13) and said that his contract was not extended to give preference to foreign coaches.
Sreejesh wrote on his In a statement issued by Hockey India on the allegations against the country’s legendary goalkeeper, Tirkey said, ‘PR Sreejesh’s coaching tenure had ended in December 2025. After this, following the protocol, advertisement was given for the post and some names were selected. Selection has been done by following proper selection process. After the process, a qualified coach has been selected whose name will be announced soon.
Offer given to become coach of development team
Tirkey said, ‘We have not removed Sreejesh, but he was offered to become the coach of the development team (India A), which is important for the Los Angeles Olympics and the next Olympic cycle. They rejected it and did not even agree to the request to reconsider the decision. The statement further said, ‘It was never told to him that the head coach wanted a foreign coach for the junior team also. We are all working together towards the government’s vision of paving the way for the 2036 Olympics and it is important to prepare our Indian coaches for this.
Tirkey said, ‘Development of grassroots and homegrown coaches has always been of paramount importance for Hockey India as a national federation. So far, we have given certification to 600 Indian coaches under the coaching program of Hockey India. He further said in his statement, ‘Hockey India is committed to the development of Indian hockey and all decisions are being taken keeping this in mind. We consider PR Sreejesh as a legend of the game and wish him success in the future.
