Chennai: The much-awaited Tamil film Karuppu, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, which released on Thursday (May 14), saw its 9 am first-day shows cancelled at the last moment, just hours before the scheduled premiere.
The development comes after reports emerged on May 13 that theatre owners were facing financial constraints related to the film’s release.
Producer S.R. Prabhu announced the cancellation around 1 am on May 14 via X (formerly Twitter) and apologised to audiences. “Due to unavoidable circumstances, the 9 am shows of ‘Karuppu’ are being cancelled. We sincerely apologise to everyone,” he wrote.
Director-actor RJ Balaji had earlier acknowledged the financial issues and expressed confidence that the producer would resolve them by the night of May 13. However, the problems reportedly remained unresolved, leading to delays in the film’s release plans.
Several theatres were also removed from booking platforms, while theatre owners shared posts citing internal financial issues. Fans expressed disappointment on social media, saying they had been waiting for the film for over two years.
The development came after the Karuppu team reportedly received approval for 9 am shows from the Tamil Nadu government, including Chief Minister Vijay.
