Singer Diljit Dosanjh, who recently turned down suggestions about entering politics in Punjab, has reportedly been travelling on a United States passport since 2022. As per a report by The Indian Express, the singer-actor obtained American citizenship that year and is no longer an Indian citizen.
The report further stated that since September 2022, Diljit has been entering India using an e-visa, indicating that he reportedly does not hold an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card either. It also claimed that he used his US passport during his latest trip to India.
Diljit Dosanjh is not Indian? The reports have sparked widespread discussion largely because Diljit Dosanjh continues to be regarded as one of the most prominent global artists of Indian origin, with an image strongly rooted in Punjabi culture and identity. Over the years, his phrase ‘Main Hoon Punjab (I am Punjab)’ became closely linked to his public persona and resonated deeply with fans across India and the Punjabi diaspora.

What has added to the curiosity is that Diljit has never publicly addressed either renouncing his Indian citizenship or obtaining American nationality. Despite the reported change in citizenship status, he has remained actively involved in Indian entertainment and continues to work extensively in both Punjabi and Hindi cinema.
Earlier this year, he also became part ofBorder 2, where he portrayed Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, the only officer from the Indian Air Force to receive the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry honour. The contrast between his reported US citizenship and his continued portrayal of deeply patriotic Indian figures has further intensified public conversation online.

According to the report, Diljit Dosanjh’s last Indian passport was reportedly issued in Mumbai in 2018, while an earlier passport was said to have been issued from Zambia. It also claims that his wife, Sandeep Kaur, is a US citizen. At the time of acquiring US citizenship, he is said to have listed a luxury bungalow in California as his residential address.
The report surfaced shortly after a group of retired IAS officers, defence personnel, and professionals from Punjab publicly encouraged him to enter politics and take up a leadership role in the state. However, Diljit declined the suggestion in a brief response on X, writing, “Kadey v nahi. Mera kaam entertainment karna [Never. My only job is to entertain].”
Under Indian law, foreign nationals seeking Indian citizenship must meet residency requirements as outlined in the Citizenship Act, including a specified period of continuous stay in India before becoming eligible to apply.
Born in Dosanjh Kalan village in Punjab, Diljit rose from regional fame to national stardom through hit albums such as G.O.A.T., MoonChild Era, Ghost, and Ishq Da Uda Ada, among others. He later established himself as a major force in Punjabi cinema and music. His popularity further expanded across India with films like Udta Punjab, while his global recognition grew through appearances on shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and performances at international platforms such as Coachella.
