A heart-wrenching and shocking incident has come to light from Sakrawan village under Asthawan police station area of Nalanda district of Bihar. Here on Tuesday, over a minor dispute over plucking a lemon, a Muslim man and his sons brutally beat a 12-year-old Hindu boy, Shubham Kumar, to death. After this heinous crime, huge communal tension has spread in the entire area and the administration had to deploy heavy police force to control the situation.

The deceased has been identified as Shubham Kumar, son of Rajkumar Paswan. According to eyewitnesses and local villagers, on Tuesday, Shubham was playing marbles nearby. Due to the strong wind, a lemon fell from the tree, which Shubham picked up.

When the owner of the tree, Gorakh Mian, saw the child taking the lemon, he became furious. It is alleged that Gorakh Mian and his two sons together attacked innocent Shubham with sticks. The child suffered serious injuries on his head and fell down bleeding. The family members were hurriedly taking him to Biharsharif hospital, but the innocent child died on the way.

As soon as the news of Shubham’s death spread, the situation in the village became explosive. The angry villagers started moving towards the accused’s house carrying the dead body of the child. When Asthawan police station tried to stop them, a violent clash broke out between the crowd and the police. Angry people pelted stones at the police, in which some policemen were injured. The police had to resort to lathicharge to control the situation.

Considering the seriousness of the matter, police forces from about 12 police stations have been called to the spot. Local woman Rabri Devi expressed her grief, saying, “The child was killed for a fallen lemon. If he had any objection they could have asked for money, but they killed him.”

Nalanda Superintendent of Police (SP) Bharat Soni confirmed the incident and said that so far 12 people have been arrested in the case. Raids are going on to arrest other absconding accused. Nalanda SP Bharat Soni said, “According to the villagers, there was a dispute over plucking of lemons. We are investigating the matter to find out the exact reason for the murder. The culprits will be given strictest punishment.”

At present, the body has been sent to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem and the situation is said to be under control due to the presence of heavy police force in the village.

This is not the first such incident to communal mentality. A few days ago, a similar case came to light in Randheerpura village of Agra district of Uttar Pradesh. There, 13 year old Hindu boy Amrit Kushwaha was murdered by Muslim farmers by slitting his throat. The only dispute was that Amrit had plucked a watermelon from his own family’s farm (which was given on share to Muslim farmers). In that case, the police had registered a case against many people including Riazuddin and Shirajuddin and made arrests.
