International Workers’ Day— Today, on May 1, on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, the contribution of crores of laborers across the country is being remembered, whose hard work has laid the foundation for the country’s progress. From the primitive man who made tools by grinding stones to the workers who operate today’s high-tech machines, the entire structure of human civilization rests on ‘labour’. Be it a farmer growing grains in the fields or a daily wage laborer laying the network of cities, his role is paramount in the society.

The contribution of workers in the key sectors that drive India’s economy, especially real estate, infrastructure and agriculture, is immeasurable. According to statistics, a large part of the total workforce of the country is employed in the unorganized sector. These workers not only do physical labor but also have the ability to convert soil into gold with their art and skill. Be it the pottery made by Kumar or the skyscrapers erected by laborers under the guidance of civil engineers, the blood and sweat of these hands is involved in every construction.

Fight for rights and ground reality

History is witness to the fact that workers have always fought a long battle for their rights. This trend, which started with Chicago’s Haymarket incident, has today reached the demand for minimum wages and safe workplaces. The government has tried to improve their condition in the last few years through e-shram portal and labor welfare schemes, but inflation and uncertain employment still remain the biggest challenges.
