'Instants' is a new feature on Instagram that gives users a new way to instantly share vanishing photos with friends. The function, introduced globally by Meta, aims to make photo sharing more informal, private. Instants allows users to share small images through Instagram's Direct Chat feature. Once visible, these images disappear and automatically expire after 24 hours. Users can only share Instants with their mutual followers or Close Friends list.
Unlike standard Instagram Stories or posts, Instants are designed to be unprocessed and raw, according to a Meta blog post. Photos can't be uploaded from the phone gallery; instead, they must be taken with the in-app camera. While stickers, filters, and editing tools aren't provided, users can add subtitles.
According to Meta, the function aims to encourage genuine sharing without creating polished content. In some countries, the company has also released a standalone Instants app that allows users to use the camera more quickly while still being connected to an Instagram account.
When a friend receives an Instant, they can reply with a Direct Message, send Instants back, and react with emojis. Shared photos can be converted to a Story Summary after being carefully stored in the sender's archive for up to one year.
Because of its short-term structure and emphasis on unfiltered sharing, the function has been compared to BeReal and Snapchat.
Features that make it easy to share with friends
Archive : For a maximum of one year, shared instances are stored in a private archive that only you can access. This can be accessed from the top-right corner of the Instants section.
Recaps for Stories: Create a recap by gathering Instants from your archive, then choose Create Recap to upload it to Stories.
No screenshots: Friends can't record or capture the Instants you post.
Undo: Accidentally send an Instant? Use the Undo button to take it back before viewing it. You can also delete it from your archive to stop sending it to people who haven't opened it yet.
Snooze: Touch and hold the Instants section in your inbox and swipe right to temporarily stop receiving them. Swipe left to bring them back.
