Special voter list revision from June 20 raises uncertainty over GBA civic polls

Bengaluru: The Election Commission’s announcement of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Karnataka from June 20 has created uncertainty over holding elections to the five city corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) before June 30.

The Election Commission of India has announced that the SIR exercise will be implemented in Karnataka along with 16 other states and three Union Territories.

In Karnataka, training for staff will be held from June 20 to June 29. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification from June 30 to July 29.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had directed that elections to the five GBA city corporations be completed before June 30.

The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms had reportedly requested the State Election Commission to grant time until September. However, the State Election Commission had rejected the request and announced that the GBA election process would be conducted between June 14 and June 24 as per the Supreme Court’s order.

With officials and staff expected to be engaged in the SIR process and census-related work, conducting the GBA elections has become difficult.

The Karnataka government has now approached the Supreme Court seeking postponement of the elections. Developments so far indicate that holding the GBA elections before June 30 appears unlikely.

BJP postpones GBA meeting

Amid uncertainty over the Greater Bengaluru Authority elections following the voter list revision announcement, a BJP meeting scheduled for Friday under the leadership of Ram Madhav has also been postponed.

Preparations had been made for the meeting at the BJP state office, Jagannath Bhavan, in Bengaluru. However, with indications that the elections may not take place immediately, meetings of BJP leaders and Bengaluru MLAs scheduled under Ram Madhav’s leadership were postponed.
