Nationwide Building Society has provided a statement about the future of all its 605 high street branches. The update comes after Nationwide recently announced it would expand a service across some of its outlets.
The savings giant pledged in late 2025 that it would maintain all its current cohort of branches across the UK, keeping all of them open until at least 2030. Nationwide also previously took on Virgin Money, completing the acquisition in 2024.
There are currently 91 Virgin Money branches and Nationwide has promised to keep these open until at least 2030 as well. This guarantee from the mutual bucks the trend compared to other big name bank providers, with many set to close branches throughout 2026.
Major providers such as NatWest and Santander have closed several outlets in recent weeks. Nationwide was asked if it has any plans to extend the branch pledge beyond 2030.
A Nationwide spokesperson said: "We extended our branch promise last November, ensuring all Nationwide and Virgin Money branches will remain open until at least 2030. This gives customers reassurance that we're continuing to invest in face-to-face service as part of our commitment to offer real choice in how they bank - whether in branch, online or by phone.
"This flexibility is well received by customers." The group was also asked what services customers frequently access in branch. The spokesperson said: "Our branches remain popular, with usage having increased in recent years, particularly where other banks have closed locally.
"Alongside everyday banking, they provide a range of services to support customers, including our Scam Checker, Safe Spaces for victims of domestic abuse, dementia clinics through Dementia UK's Admiral Nurses, and Digital Lessons to help build confidence with technology."
Expanding branch servicesNationwide recently announced it would expand its dementia clinics, with trial clinics at some of its Virgin Money branches. With these clinics, you can book a 45-minute slot to speak to a specialist nurse about any concerns you have about the illness.
Anyone affected by dementia can come along. You can get advice with issues such as the symptoms to look out for and getting a diagnosis, as well as providing care for someone with dementia.
Nationwide members will also soon find out if they get some bonus cash again this year through the Fairer Share scheme. This bonus programme is where Nationwide distributes its profits among loyal members.
There has been a £100 payment over each of the past three years. More than four million of customers pocketed the cash in 2025.
Nationwide is set to make an announcement about this year's payment when it announces its endofyear financial results on Thursday, May 21.
