A new discussion has started regarding PCOS, the rapidly increasing hormonal problem in women. It is being claimed in social media and some medical reports that now it is being given a new name PMOS. It is being told that this change has been suggested by an AIIMS doctor, after which the debate on this topic has intensified.
Why is there talk of changing the name?
According to the information, some experts believe that the word PCOS gives meaning limited only to “ovary”, whereas this problem is not limited to reproductive organs only. It is a complex metabolic and hormonal disorder, which affects the entire body. For this reason, a new name, such as “PMOS,” is being suggested to better reflect the true nature of the disease—i.e., metabolic and hormonal imbalance.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a condition in which the hormonal balance in women’s body gets disturbed. This can cause irregular periods, weight gain, unwanted facial hair and fertility problems.
Is PMOS the official name?
At present “PMOS” is not officially recognized by any international medical organization. It is currently under discussion as a proposed name or concept that some experts are using to describe PCOS more broadly. Doctors say that the main objective of changing the name is to develop the correct understanding of this disease among the patients and common people, so that it is not considered only as “ovary problem”.
expert opinion
According to gynecologists, PCOS is a lifestyle and hormone- disease, in which insulin resistance and metabolic changes also play an important role. Therefore, the discussion on giving it a broader term may move forward with time.
