Queen Elizabeth II is said to have "repeatedly trashed" Sarah Ferguson behind closed doors, according to royal author Andrew Lownie. The late royal passed away at the age of 96 on September 8, 2022, with members of the Royal Family left devastated by her passing.

Sarah was previously married to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and was thought to have continued to share a close bond with her late mother-in-law despite the divorce from her second-born son. Sarah previously described her as more of a mother to her than her own, with the two often bonding over their shared interest in horses and corgis.

Although from Sarah's perspective, their relationship was close, it has been reported that the late Queen may not have viewed Sarah positively.

Writing in an updated version of his book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, Mr Lownie wrote: "Sarah Ferguson has talked up her relationship with the Queen but according to a royal source, the monarch repeatedly trashed Fergie behind the scenes, refraining in public because Sarah was the mother of her two granddaughters."

He then added that the late Queen and two other royals often felt they didn't want to speak ill of Sarah because it would add more "scandal" to the family.

Mr Lownie added: "The source said: 'Several people, notably the Queen, ex-Prince Andrew and Prince Charles, were aware of her activities for years but turned a blind eye to protect the family from more scandal."

Following her death in 2022, Sarah took to Instagram to share her heartbreak.

She wrote: "I am heartbroken by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy: the most fantastic example of duty and service and steadfastness, and a constant steadying presence as our head of state for more than 70 years.

"She has given her whole life selflessly to the people of the UK and the Commonwealth.

"To me, she was the most incredible mother-in-law and friend. I will always be grateful to her for the generosity she showed me in remaining close to me even after my divorce. I will miss her more than words can express."
