The former St Ambrose Barlow Roman Catholic High School in Swinton, Salford, was the Waterloo Road set for series 11-13. It was demolished in 2014 after the school officially closed in 2013. The site was also used as a filming location for TV series 4 O'Clock Club. Salford City Council ended up securing over £1.6million from the Brownfield Land Release Fund to demolish the buildings and create 96 new homes.
The former Waterloo Road filming location, and actual high school, was demolished in 2014. The BBC series filmed there for two seasons and was a prominent part of the show prior to its closure. The derelict building turned into one filled with graffiti and it was left utterly empty, looking very different to the busy school it portrayed back when the original show was airing. Exploring With Jake, on Facebook, shared a series of photos from the location with both inside and outside images published.
He wrote: "Abandoned Waterloo Road Tv set Salford. St Ambrose Barlow Roman Catholic High School Behind the scenes. From Series 11 to Series 13, the building used for the school was the former St Ambrose Barlow Roman Catholic High School in Swinton. As of Series 14, Waterloo due for demolition to make way for new houses." People were sharing their memories in the comments of it being both a good school and the opportunities locals had as an extra on the show.
One image showed the school looking completely eerie and empty as photos of it in pure darkness were shared, from the comments it isn't how people remembered it looking. One user wrote: "The memories." While another said of the demolition: "It's such a shame."
The school was notably a film set for the popular show and various scenes would have been filmed in the lunch hall, this image shows how the busy kitchen looked years after its final student and final film crew waltzed through the doors, and it was certainly very different to what was last seen on screen -- but it was a different view for the local residents too.
From old artwork to graffiti indoors the school was scattered with images down the halwlay that once saw various famous faces appear. Waterloo Road was one of the UK's most popular school dramas at the time and saw the first snippet of fame for multiple members of its cast such as Jenna Coleman, Phoebe Dynevor and Lucien Laviscount, to name a few.
In a separate post on Reddit one user discussed the old school being turned into a housing estate, writing: "But anyway, seeing the old Waterloo set is now a housing estate is so strange. So many memories just gotten rid of...I don't even know how to explain it properly but I think if you know what I mean then you'll just get it lol. It being a new build estate is even worse, they're so bland and designed terribly. But yeah just kinda makes me upset that it's completely gone."
The demolition made way for 96 new homes to be built on the site, though people in the comments noted that it would be weird for people who live on the estate now to realise they're living on the grounds of the original Waterloo Road. However, while it was sad to see it go, others noted that as the BBC wasn't filming there all year around and it wasn't always used as a school, it was a better use of the space to create more homes for people.
