Nepal Supreme Court: India’s neighboring country Nepal has recently taken a big decision. The Balen government here had made it mandatory to impose custom duty on goods from India costing more than Rs 100. But the Supreme Court there has issued an interim order to stop this controversial policy of the Nepal government. According to the information given by Nepali media, the joint bench of Supreme Court Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal and Tek Prasad Dhungana gave a clear order to the Nepalese administration that until the final decision of the court comes, no such rules will be implemented in India.

Why was there controversy over Balen Shah’s policy?

The controversy over this policy of the Balen government started when the government implemented a rule. Under this rule of the government, it will be mandatory to levy customs duty on goods worth more than Rs 100 brought from India to Nepal. After this rule of the government, strictness on Nepalese posts increased. Customs duty also started being imposed on spices and other small grocery items.

Nepali Supreme Court banned

In its order, the Supreme Court heard the writ petition challenging the government’s decision. The petitioner argued that charging customs duty on goods worth more than Rs 100 would be considered a violation of the provisions of ‘Customs Act 2024’. This policy of the government is not legally correct. This creates additional burden on common citizens. The Supreme Court ordered the administration to keep this provision suspended until the final decision.

But, after this rule of the Balen government, there was a debate between the local residents and the customs officials. After the implementation of the rules, checking and searching of people returning from India increased. Due to which there was anger among the people here against this policy of the government.
