The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recently released the results for the Class 12 examinations held in 2026. For the first time, CBSE had the Class 12 answer scripts evaluated using the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, following which the results were declared. A decline has been recorded in the CBSE Class 12 results for 2026, marking the lowest performance recorded in the last seven years. Furthermore, it has come to light that many students in the Science stream received lower marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. While the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system has been cited as the reason for this outcome, CBSE has refuted this claim.
In a released statement, CBSE has defended the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. Additionally, the Board has provided information regarding the options available to students to address such situations. Let us examine the entire matter in detail.
**OSM System Introduced for Transparency and Uniformity**
CBSE has noted that, since the declaration of the Class 12 results, numerous posts have surfaced on social media regarding the evaluation conducted under the 'On-Screen Marking' (OSM) system. These posts specifically discuss the lower marks obtained by students, particularly in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Mathematics. In its statement, CBSE clarified that the OSM system was introduced with the objective of enhancing transparency, fairness, and uniformity within the evaluation process.
CBSE further stated that this system ensures 'stepwise marking'—a key feature that has long been an integral part of the Board's evaluation framework. The primary aim of this system is to promote uniformity and fairness in the evaluation of answer scripts across various subjects and different geographical regions.
**Students Can Apply for Re-evaluation**
In an effort to resolve the controversy currently circulating on social media, CBSE has provided details regarding the options available to students. CBSE has stated that another key feature of its evaluation system is providing an opportunity for ‘re-evaluation’ to students who may be dissatisfied with their results. This reflects the Board's commitment to transparency, fairness, and equity.
Students Can Review Their Evaluated Answer Sheets
CBSE has announced that, this year as well, students will be provided with the opportunity for re-evaluation. Students may apply to obtain copies of their evaluated answer sheets; should they identify any discrepancies, they may request corrective action. All these procedures must be carried out exclusively through the mechanism established by the Board.
CBSE reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining a fair, equitable, consistent, and uniform evaluation system, ensuring that these processes remain fully aligned with the transparent and robust evaluation methodologies adopted by the Board.
