Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has made a major announcement regarding the NEET UG examination. He declared that, starting next year, the NEET UG exam will be conducted in a computer-based format—specifically, the CBT (Computer-Based Test) mode. He assured students that the government is committed to ensuring a clean, fair, and secure examination system, and that no individual or group found using unfair means will be spared. Addressing the media, he also confirmed that the re-examination will now be held on June 21.
Dharmendra Pradhan stated that the NTA announced the date for the re-examination following a review of the irregularities that surfaced after the exam held on May 3. Admit cards for this re-examination will be issued on June 14; additionally, students will be allotted an extra 15 minutes of time for the exam this time around.
The Education Minister explained that concerns regarding a NEET UG paper leak were raised on May 7, prompting the government to initiate an official investigation into the matter. Subsequently, by May 12, preliminary investigations revealed that the question paper had been leaked under the guise of a 'guess paper' network. He emphasized that the government's priority is to ensure that deserving and eligible candidates are not adversely affected by these events. Speaking on the fairness of the examination process, he asserted, "We do not want any injustice to be done to deserving students."
What is CBT Mode?
First, let us understand exactly what CBT mode entails. Essentially, CBT stands for Computer-Based Test; it is an online examination conducted on computers, wherein students receive questions on a computer screen at the examination center and must select the correct answers using a mouse. The primary advantage of this method is that it is significantly more secure and transparent compared to traditional pen-and-paper examinations. Under this system, the likelihood of paper leaks or malpractices becomes negligible.
Will Re-registration Be Required? The NTA has already announced that candidates who are already registered for the NEET UG 2026 examination are eligible to appear for the re-examination. The details of the registered candidates, along with their chosen examination centers, will be carried forward for the re-exam. No fresh registration will be required for this, nor will any additional examination fee be charged to the candidates.
