The troubles of Azam Khan, a strong leader of Samajwadi Party and a big face of Uttar Pradesh politics, are not showing signs of decreasing. Azam Khan, who is surrounded by one legal case after another, has received another big blow from the Rampur court. The court has declared him guilty in the case of extremely objectionable and controversial remarks made against the then District Officer (DM) during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Azam Khan’s statement in which he had said that ‘he is a pensioner, I will make him clean his shoes’, has now become a thorn in the neck for him.

What is this whole matter and why was there an uproar?

This entire controversy started during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign. While addressing an election rally in Rampur, Azam Khan lost his temper from the stage and targeted the then collector fiercely. Using very aggressive and indecent language, he had said in front of the public, “Everyone, stay strong, do not be afraid of these collectors, they are penniless, not afraid of penniless people. And I have seen many photos of Mayawati ji, how big officers are cleaning their shoes by taking out handkerchiefs. Yes, I have an alliance with them, I will get their shoes cleaned only by them, Allah willing.”

This statement of Azam Khan given from the stage spread like wildfire on social media and its video went viral. The Election Commission immediately took cognizance of the use of such language against an on-duty IAS officer in an election environment and sought a detailed report of the entire matter from the State Election Commission.

This is how the case was filed after the video went viral

As soon as the Election Commission received the report of this matter, instructions were immediately issued for strict legal action. The administration came into action on the orders of the then District Magistrate of Rampur and currently the Commissioner of Moradabad, Anjaneya Kumar Singh. After this, the then SDM Tanda and ARO of Chamraua assembly constituency Ghanshyam Tripathi, showing promptness in this matter, filed a case of code of conduct violation and derogatory remarks against Azam Khan in Bhot police station of Rampur. After the case was registered, the police investigated quickly and filed a charge sheet in the court.

The court accepted the arguments of the prosecution and gave its seal of approval.

In this high-profile case, a long hearing took place in the court, statements of witnesses were recorded and evidence was examined. During the hearing, the government lawyer i.e. the prosecution presented very strong arguments before the court. The prosecution said that the kind of indecent and derogatory language Azam Khan used against a top government official on duty by misusing a public platform and mike is not acceptable in a civilized society. This not only hurts administrative dignity but is also a serious crime under law. The court finally found Azam Khan guilty in this case, considering the final arguments of both the parties and the evidence presented to be correct.
