The Los Angeles Lakers are heading into one of their most important summers in years, and everything appears to revolve around one name, and that is Luka Doncic . The season showed flashes of contention before ending abruptly against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Now, the franchise is already moving with urgency. There is no rebuilding language coming out of Los Angeles. Build around Doncic and maximize the championship window while the roster still has enough star power to matter.
That urgency has already reached the front office and coaching staff. General manager Rob Pelinka openly described the coming months as a “collaborative process” with Doncic, a sign that the Lakers want their superstar deeply involved in shaping the roster. With major decisions looming around veterans, player options, and free agency, Los Angeles is preparing for a summer that could redefine the next era of Lakers basketball.
JJ Redick reveals Luka Doncic’s offseason plans
While questions around Luka Doncic’s conditioning have followed him for years, Redick made it clear the organization views things very differently internally. Speaking about the 27-year-old guard’s development this season, the Lakers coach pointed less toward statistics and more toward maturity.
“I think a lot has been made about Luka’s fitness level and his dedication to that,” Redick said, via Benjamin Royer.
“He was great throughout the season. He’s still in fantastic shape six weeks after an injury. But he’s also grown as a leader. I think that was one of the challenges coming into the season that we presented him with. He grew in that regard.”
The growth became visible during the Lakers’ late-season surge. Between late February and early April, Los Angeles ripped through the Western Conference with a 16-2 stretch that briefly made them look like legitimate title threats. Doncic orchestrated the offense with control and confidence, while his chemistry with LeBron James and Austin Reaves finally looked natural instead of forced.
More importantly, teammates reportedly saw a different side of him behind the scenes.
“He was very committed this year to developing those relationships, both on and off the court,” Redick added. “He was phenomenal this year as a teammate and a leader, and obviously, as a player, the guy had a tier-one season relative to the rest of the league.”
Lakers offseason plans centered around Luka Doncic’s future
The Lakers now enter an offseason loaded with difficult choices. LeBron James, Rui Hachimura , and Luke Kennard are approaching free agency, while several rotation players hold player options that could reshape the roster overnight.
Still, the direction feels obvious. Los Angeles wants to recreate the type of roster Doncic thrived with during his Dallas Mavericks Finals run in 2024.
