Maharashtra: Big news has come for millions of people using bike taxi services like Ola, Uber and Rapido. Taking strict action, the Maharashtra government has directed Google and Apple to remove these three ride-hailing apps from their app stores. The government alleges that these companies are running bike taxi services illegally in violation of the rules in the state.
The government says that the safety of passengers, especially women, cannot be ignored. For this reason, Maharashtra Cyber Department has initiated legal action and issued a notice to Google and Apple. However, currently all three apps Ola, Uber and Rapido are available on Play Store and App Store.
Legal notice sent to Google and Apple
On May 15, Maharashtra Cyber Department issued a legal notice to Google and Apple under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act. In this notice, both the companies have been instructed to remove Ola, Uber and Rapido apps from their platforms and stop the access of users. According to reports, the notice also warns that if the order is not followed, legal action will be taken against the companies concerned.
Why did the government take this decision?
According to reports, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said that these companies are running passenger transport services without following the rules of the Transport Department and the Motor Vehicle Act. They allege that necessary government approval has not been taken for the bike taxi services running through these apps.
Questions raised on security arrangements
According to the government, serious deficiencies have been observed in essential systems like driver verification, insurance protection and emergency response system on these platforms. Recently, a case of death of a female passenger in a bike taxi accident also came to light. Apart from this, many cases of misbehavior with women have also increased the concern of the government.
Told women’s safety as the biggest priority
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik clearly said that the safety of women is more important than employment for the government. The state government’s stance is that strict action is necessary against apps that violate rules, so that the illegal bike taxi business can be completely stopped.
