The Central Board of Secondary Education has issued an official clarification after criticism erupted over the 2026 Class 12 board results. Many students, parents, and teachers claimed this year’s marks were unexpectedly low and blamed the newly introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) evaluation system for the decline.
According to the board, the overall pass percentage for Class 12 in 2026 dropped to 85.2%, making it the lowest result recorded in the last seven years. Following the result announcement, several complaints surfaced on social media, especially regarding lower-than-expected scores in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology.
CBSE explained that the digital OSM system was introduced to improve transparency, consistency, and fairness in the evaluation process. The board stated that digital checking reduces manual errors and ensures that step-wise marking is done properly for every answer.
Officials also clarified that the evaluation process follows strict marking guidelines and that students are awarded marks according to the official assessment scheme. CBSE said the new system was designed to create a more accurate and standardized evaluation method across all regions.
Several students had claimed online that despite qualifying for competitive exams like JEE, they scored poorly in the board examinations. Responding to such concerns, the board emphasized that board exams and competitive exams follow different evaluation patterns and assessment criteria.
Re-evaluation Process Begins From May 19
CBSE has announced that the re-evaluation process for Class 12 results will begin on May 19, 2026. Students who are dissatisfied with their marks must first apply for photocopies of their evaluated answer sheets. After reviewing them, they can request verification or re-evaluation of specific answers.
The board has advised candidates to complete all formalities within the official deadline and submit the required fees. CBSE also confirmed that if any discrepancy is found during re-evaluation, necessary corrections will be made.
Compartment Exam Option Available
Students who failed in one subject may still be eligible for compartment examinations, provided they meet the remaining passing criteria set by the board. Detailed schedules and fee structures related to re-evaluation and compartment exams are expected to be released soon on the official CBSE website.
The controversy surrounding the 2026 results has sparked a wider discussion about digital evaluation systems and the pressure faced by students in board examinations. However, CBSE has maintained that the OSM system is aimed at improving fairness and reducing inconsistencies in the marking process.
