IPL 2026 started on 28 March. Since then, teams may have traveled millions of kilometers by air and road. Considering the schedules of the teams and the matches taking place in different cities, this travel is justified. However, the current situation has changed due to the US-Iran war, and air travel during the IPL may put further pressure on the Indian government. In view of this matter, Brijesh Goyal, Chairman of Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), the top organization of businessmen and entrepreneurs of Delhi and the country, has written a letter to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya demanding that by reducing air travel, a new schedule should be issued for the remaining IPL matches.
Brijesh Goyal demanded from the Sports Minister that the matches should be held on limited grounds without spectators. He said that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers successfully organized the IPL on fewer grounds. He said that on an average, around 50,000 spectators come to a match, which consumes thousands of liters of petrol and diesel. Therefore, by conducting IPL without spectators, so much fuel can be saved.
How much fuel are IPL teams using in their air travel?
According to CTI, IPL teams usually use chartered aircraft like Boeing 737 or Airbus A320, which consume an average of 2,400 to 3,000 liters of fuel every hour. Thus, if a flight is of approximately two hours, the estimated consumption is around 5,000 to 6,000 liters of aviation fuel (ATF). He said that if the aircraft is larger or carries more weight for longer distances, this figure can go up to 7,000 to 8,000 litres. Multiplying this fuel consumption by approximately 10 air travel times of the teams, it can be said that each team is consuming approximately 50,000 to 70,000 liters of aviation fuel.
Demand to save petrol and diesel
While on the advice of Prime Minister Modi, every government department, leader, officer and common citizen is trying to avoid wasteful expenditure, IPL is the only event which seems untouched by any crisis in these difficult times. CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal said that the need of the hour is that the remaining matches of IPL should be rescheduled and they should be held on limited grounds without spectators, which will save lakhs of liters of fuel, petrol and diesel and reduce the burden on the country.
