India has reached a pivotal milestone in the realm of indigenous military aircraft production. The first domestically manufactured C-295 transport aircraft, developed at the Tata and Airbus facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, is now reportedly ready for its inaugural test flight. Inspection by Air Force Officials

Recently, Air Marshal Avadhesh Kumar Bharti, the Deputy Chief of the Indian Air Force, visited the final assembly unit in Vadodara to assess the project's progress firsthand. The Indian Air Force shared on social media that the aircraft is in the final stages of preparation for its first flight. This project, a collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Airbus, is set to elevate India's indigenous aircraft manufacturing capabilities.

Inauguration and Procurement Details

It is noteworthy that the state-of-the-art facility in Vadodara was inaugurated on October 28, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. India has entered into a contract worth approximately ₹21,935 crores with Spain for the procurement of 56 C-295 transport aircraft. Out of these, 16 aircraft will be delivered in a ready-to-fly condition directly from Spain, while the remaining 40 will be manufactured in India.

A Step Towards Self-Reliance

The government views this initiative as a significant success of the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat campaigns. Historically, India has relied on foreign companies for its military aircraft needs, but this project is expected to foster self-reliance in modern defense technology and aircraft manufacturing. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently stated that the first C-295 aircraft manufactured in India is expected to be ready by September 2026. The readiness of the aircraft for test flights indicates that the project is progressing rapidly.

Capabilities of the C-295 Aircraft

The C-295 is a medium-range tactical military transport aircraft designed for troop transport, cargo handling, medical evacuation, and special military operations. It can carry up to 70 soldiers, 48 paratroopers, or 24 medical stretchers. This modern aircraft will replace the older Avro-748 planes currently used by the Indian Air Force.

Advanced Features and Strategic Importance

Equipped with two powerful turboprop engines, the C-295 can take off from short and rugged airstrips. Its standout feature is its ability to operate from rough, semi-developed, and small airstrips, making it highly suitable for India's strategic needs, particularly in mountainous regions and remote forward military bases.

An important aspect of this project is that all 56 aircraft will be fitted with indigenous electronic warfare systems, developed by Bharat Electronics Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited.
