Early signs of high blood pressure and diabetes

Early Signs of High Blood Pressure and Diabetes: High blood pressure and diabetes are among the fastest-growing diseases today. Doctors say that these two diseases often affect the body together, and their symptoms are initially so mild that people ignore them, thinking they are just normal fatigue or stress. However, over time, these problems can cause serious damage to the heart, kidneys, eyes, brain, and blood vessels.

Why is the problem of diabetes increasing in India?

According to an Indian Council of Medical Research-INDIAB study, high blood pressure and diabetes in India are directly linked to obesity, low physical activity, and poor lifestyle habits. The study also revealed that a significant number of people, both in cities and villages, are unaware of these diseases.

Which symptoms should not be ignored?

Dr. Ameet Soni, Associate Vice President and Head of Medical Affairs at Corona Remedies Ltd., says that high blood pressure and diabetes are interconnected metabolic conditions. Sometimes, one condition rapidly worsens the other. Signs like persistent headaches, blurred vision, unusual fatigue, swelling in the legs, and frequent urination should not be ignored, as these can indicate worsening of both blood sugar and blood pressure.

What damage does diabetes cause to the arteries?

According to doctors, frequent headaches, especially in the morning or after exertion, could be a sign of high blood pressure. Diabetes, along with other symptoms, increases the risk of blood vessel damage. Diabetes hardens the arteries, forcing the heart to work harder to pump blood.

Dr. Uday Phadke, director of endocrinology and diabetes at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Pune, told TOI that diabetes and high blood pressure can coexist in the same person without any major symptoms. Together, they increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and vision loss.

What are the symptoms of damage to the nerves of the eyes?

Doctors say that blurred vision, dark spots before the eyes, or sudden difficulty focusing may not be just eye fatigue. It could also be a sign of diabetic retinopathy or damage to the optic nerves from high blood pressure.

What are its symptoms?

Additionally, swelling in the legs, persistent fatigue, frequent urination at night, and excessive thirst can also be warning signs of a serious underlying problem. According to doctors, these symptoms occur when the kidneys are unable to properly filter excess sugar and fluid from the blood.

Why is the danger increasing?

Experts believe that poor sleep, long hours of sedentary work, high salt and packaged foods, smoking, alcohol, and insufficient exercise are rapidly increasing the risk of these diseases among young people. Doctors advise that regular blood pressure and blood sugar checks are essential after the age of 30. Additionally, small habits like daily walks, a healthy diet, better sleep, and weight control can help prevent major illnesses in the future.
