Hanoi sidewalk businesses struggle to adapt as city tightens encroachment rules

After nearly two months of stricter enforcement, many business owners on Duy Tan Street said they are cutting staff or considering giving up their rental spaces.
Giap Thi Thiem, 30, owner of a fish noodle and grilled pork noodle shop there, said not being allowed to place tables and chairs on the sidewalk has almost completely disrupted her business.
She used to set up 20 tables on the sidewalk, each serving three to four customersbut now, after moving indoors, she can serve only 20 customers at a timeshe said.
“Now we can only fit seven tables inside. With that number of customers, I cannot cover the rent.”
Her monthly rent is VND25 million.
