Taking major action in the NEET paper leak case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Latur’s RCC Classes head Shivraj Motegaonkar. His interrogation started at 2 pm on Sunday (May 17). Two days before this, CBI had seized many important documents from the office of his coaching institute, although he was not taken into custody at that time. Now taking action, he was taken into CBI custody and the interrogation continued till Sunday night.
After the information about the question paper of NEET exam was leaked, a parent had filed a complaint that 42 questions taught in this coaching institute were directly asked in the NEET exam. The police had just started investigating the case when the CBI team reached Latur and started interrogating Motegaonkar. However, it was not initially made public against which coaching operator the action was being taken.
On Saturday (May 16), it became clear that the CBI was interrogating the operator of a coaching institute, but on the same day Motegaonkar had claimed that he was teaching students normally. Now the news of his formal arrest has come to light on Monday morning.
Investigation has revealed that even before the examination, i.e. on 23 April 2026, Motegaonkar had obtained the questions and answers of NEET UG examination. In a search conducted at his residence in Latur on May 14, leaked questions of this examination were found in his mobile phone. According to the investigating agency, after the completion of the examination, they had deleted/destroyed the question paper in order to destroy the evidence. It is suspected that he had made this question paper available to many students and individuals. However, Motegaonkar has hesitated in telling the CBI officials the names of the beneficiary students to whom these papers were given.
Professor PV Kulkarni of Latur, who is already arrested in the paper leak case, who is a chemistry professor, and Shivraj Motegaonkar have also been teaching chemistry. CBI officials are now investigating what kind of relationship existed between the accused professor and Motegaonkar.
Motegaonkar has been active in welcoming the students who have passed the medical entrance examination in Latur by playing the band and in promoting the so-called ‘Latur Pattern’ as a model of success in education. After his detention, questions are now being raised on the quality and credibility of ‘Latur Pattern’.
It is noteworthy that at least 30 to 32 big coaching institutes are running in Latur, where fees worth lakhs of rupees are charged from students. This case has raised serious questions not only on the coaching industry but also on the transparency of the medical entrance examination system.
