Avocado on toast is a nutritious way to kick off the morning, yet many people wrongly assume it is a dull breakfast simply because they are not preparing it correctly. It may appear to be a straightforward recipe, but avocados tend to be rather tasteless unless you know the right technique to draw out their flavour.
Gaby Dalkin, a chef and founder of What's Gaby Cooking, has revealed that a pinch of salt will unlock an avocado's natural creaminess. She said: "Always finish your avocado toast with a sprinkling of chunky salt. It bumps up the flavour in the best possible way and adds a bit of texture."
How to make avocado on toast properly
Salt will enhance a more buttery flavour while adding a satisfying crunch to complement the avocado, making your breakfast considerably more pleasurable to eat.
Nevertheless, it is vital to ensure you are selecting the finest avocados at the supermarket and confirming they are sufficiently ripe before preparing this morning dish.
Gaby said: "I tend to buy my avocados rock hard so they can ripen on my own kitchen counter without anyone else touching them. When they are ready, they should just have the slightest give to them."
Ripe avocados will feel marginally soft, appear dark green, and the area beneath the stem should be green. Should you need to ripen an avocado swiftly, try the straightforward paper bag method, which will have it ready to consume within just a few hours.
Simply toast the bread until it turns golden brown. Many people opt for chunky loaf bread for avocado toast, meaning you may find it easier to toast in a frying pan on the hob should the bread be too large for your toaster.
To slice an avocado, simply cut it in half and remove the stone. Scoop out the flesh and transfer it into a bowl, mashing it with a fork for several minutes until you achieve your desired consistency.
Gabby said: "Chunky avocado vs smooth avocado... it's really a personal decision but I prefer it mostly smooth with a few chunks. If it's too chunky, I find that the avocado falls off and no one wants that."
Stir in salt and pepper to your mashed avocado, ensuring you also incorporate a squeeze of lemon juice. Lemon juice further elevates the seasoning to make the avocado considerably more flavoursome while lending a vibrant, zesty character to the fruit.
Spread the avocado generously across your toast and you'll have a truly magnificent breakfast. Feel free to add whatever additional toppings take your fancy, such as poached eggs, bacon, smoked salmon or even chilli flakes.
Avocado toast is remarkably straightforward to prepare and can be tailored entirely to your preferences, though ensuring you season it correctly from the outset will make a world of difference to the final flavour.
