The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 is set to commence on July 17, featuring a rematch of the 2024 final, where the defending champions, Jaffna Kings, will face the Galle Marvels, who were the runners-up in the previous edition. This inaugural match will take place at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, a venue that recently hosted its first T20 International during this year's T20 World Cup, according to ESPNcricinfo. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 PM local time and will be preceded by an official opening ceremony to celebrate the beginning of the 2026 season.
LPL 2026 Schedule and Venues
The tournament is planned to run from July 17 to August 8. Initially, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had announced a start date of July 10, with matches to be held at four international venues. The Sinhalese Sports Club Ground will host five matches from July 17 to 19, after which the tournament will move to Dambulla and Kandy. The knockout stages and the final will return to Colombo, specifically at the R. Premadasa Stadium, with a reserve day for the final set for August 9.
Team and Player Regulations
The 2026 LPL will feature five teams representing Jaffna, Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Dambulla. While the official names and ownership details of the franchises are yet to be confirmed, SLC is expected to announce the finalized team identities and branding as the tournament approaches.
Player Registration and Squad Rules
The player registration portal has been open since May 8 and will close on May 20. Direct signings can occur until May 22, but the registration deadline for all categories remains May 20. To promote local talent, SLC requires each squad to include two emerging Under-23 local players, with at least one player needing to be in the starting XI. Additionally, teams must have a minimum of four overseas players participating in each match.
Media Obligations
The LPL will maintain a strong focus on player media responsibilities and fan interaction. Players who do not fulfill the tournament's media and promotional obligations may face match-fee penalties ranging from 5% to 50%.
