Guwahati, May 18: The Assam administration has mandated strict measures, including the revocation of trade licenses, for shops and businesses that impose excessive prices in light of the recent surge in fuel costs and essential goods prices throughout the state.
This decision followed a review meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, where he urged officials to enhance monitoring efforts to stabilize the market and curb unjustified price hikes.
In a social media update, Sarma stated, “Our government is vigilantly observing market trends and will not tolerate any unfair price increases. I have directed district officials to monitor prices closely and take decisive action against violators.”
During the meeting, the Chief Minister instructed District Monitoring Committees, headed by Deputy Commissioners, to convene within the next few days for thorough field assessments to detect abnormal pricing in local markets.
He also emphasized the importance of weekly meetings between district administrations and trade associations to monitor commodity price fluctuations and ensure effective communication with traders.
Additionally, Sarma mandated that all retail and wholesale outlets display their prices prominently to promote transparency for consumers.
The Chief Minister highlighted the urgency of completing Aadhaar seeding for beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to prevent duplication in LPG cylinder distribution.
This government intervention comes as public frustration grows over the rising costs of daily necessities, particularly following a recent Rs 3 per litre increase in fuel prices.
A shopkeeper in Guwahati noted that prices for various items have surged significantly in recent days.
“The latest stock has seen a price increase of Rs 10 to Rs 20. Just two days ago, a tray of eggs was priced at Rs 180. We’ve also heard that bread prices have gone up,” he remarked.
He added that traders are feeling the strain due to escalating procurement costs.
“We are struggling to purchase goods as the price hikes require more investment. Customers often question us about the new prices. Their purchasing power has also diminished, with many only buying essentials,” he explained.
Residents in Guwahati expressed that the rise in fuel prices has led to a domino effect on grocery and commodity prices.
“This situation is unacceptable. I urge the state government to lower the prices of petrol, diesel, and essential goods instead of providing financial aid through schemes. We need lower prices for necessities,” one resident stated.
Another resident voiced concerns about the ongoing price increases.
“If prices keep rising, we will face a crisis. Our only plea to the government is to alleviate these soaring costs,” the resident added.
Previously, members of the Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) protested against the post-election fuel price hikes and the subsequent rise in commodity prices.
