UK households urged to close windows on Saturday

UK households have been advised to close their windows on Saturday. It comes as hot weather is expected to arrive later in the week. After changeable weather in the UK over the last few weeks, current weather maps show rising temperatures over the coming days and weeks, and Brits are getting excited for the summery conditions many of them have been missing. However, summer comes with certain discomforts.

Us Brits are all too familiar with hot houses and flats that are a ngihtmare to cool down, especially after the significant amount of heatwaves the country experienced last year. However, there are many tips and tricks for keeping your home cool during warm weather, and many of them don't cost a penny. As well as avoiding certain appliances like the dishwasher and oven when the weather is particularly hot, households should also be careful when opening and closing their windows. The key is to keep them closed when it's hot outside, as you want to keep as much cool air inside as you can.

The latest weather maps from WXCharts show temperatures as high as 25C in London and temperatures above 20C in plenty of other parts of the country this coming Sunday, May 24.

As such, many households will become warm, an uncomfortable situation for many. While households rely on things like fans to stay cool, the first step should be closing windows at the right time.

According to the NHS, households should "close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down".

"Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees," it adds. "Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep."

Households should keep an eye on hourly forecasts and take note of when temperatures rise on the day. Temperatures are their coolest early in the morning and late in the evening, as well as through the night. This is when windows should be open to let cool air in, which should then be trapped during the day by closing the windows.

Meanwhile, the British Red Cross urges households to close their blinds and curtains at certain times of the day to keep the heat out and cool air in. "Sun shining through the glass can warm your home up quickly," the organisation warns.

"Make sure to cover windows during the day to protect from direct sunlight like blinds, curtains, or external shutters. If you don't have anything to block out the sun, hanging a bed sheet or towel should have a similar effect."

According to the Met Office, Saturday will be warm with some showery weather and a chance of thunderstorms in places. It makes sense, then, to keep that heat out of your home as best you can by closing all windows.

Then, by Sunday and through Bank Holiday Monday, "warm and fair weather" is expected to prevail. High pressure is expected to broadly remain in place for much of the UK throughout the week that follows, while temperatures are expected to be "above normal, feeling very warm at times with light winds".

Moving into June, high pressure is likely to continue, meaning more warm days are on the way for the UK. Households are advised to take the necessary steps to keep their homes cool during warm weather.
