The absence of MS Dhoni from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lineup has been extended, as he missed a vital match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk Stadium on May 18.
Dhoni has been sidelined for nearly a month due to a calf injury he sustained before CSK's opening game against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. Despite an initial two-week recovery period, the five-time IPL champion has been ruled out of further matches, marking the 13th consecutive game he has missed.
Speculations on Dhoni's Return
There were hopes that Dhoni might return for CSK's last home game of the season, but his name was absent from the official team sheet for the crucial match against SRH.
Update from Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad, the CSK captain, provided insights into Dhoni's condition ahead of the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. After winning the toss, he confirmed that while Dhoni was present with the team, he was not fit enough to play.
"MS is still here, but he is not fit enough to play this game," Gaikwad stated during the toss, addressing the fans at Chepauk.
Dhoni's Decision to Travel
Despite his unfitness, Dhoni chose to travel with the CSK squad to the stadium, aiming to avoid being a distraction for Gaikwad, allowing him to lead the team independently.
His presence at Chepauk generated excitement among fans who were eager to see 'Thala' on the field once more.
Injury Setbacks for Dhoni
Reports indicate that Dhoni sustained a thumb injury during practice, which has further delayed his return to the game. This new setback has reset his rehabilitation timeline, complicating his recovery from the calf injury.
Even though he was unfit, Dhoni traveled with the team for their final home game of the season, as CSK's last league match will take place in Ahmedabad.
A Special Acknowledgment Ceremony
As CSK concluded their home game cycle, the franchise traditionally holds a post-match lap of honor at Chepauk. Dhoni, who has a deep emotional connection with the Chennai fans, wanted to take this opportunity to thank the 'Yellow Army' for their unwavering support during a challenging season.
The franchise encouraged fans to stay after the match for a special acknowledgment ceremony and a lap of honor featuring the entire team.
CSK's Current Standing
Currently, CSK is positioned fifth in the league, having secured six victories out of 12 matches, accumulating 12 points with a net run rate (NRR) of +0.027.
