New Delhi: In light of the recent Ebola outbreaks reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, India is ramping up its surveillance and preparedness protocols at entry points and throughout the public health infrastructure, according to official sources on Monday.

The Union Health Ministry is actively monitoring the situation following the World Health Organization's (WHO) designation of the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Officials from the Union Health Ministry, including those from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), have assessed the situation and initiated precautionary health measures.

A senior official from the health ministry confirmed that there have been no reported cases of Ebola, specifically the Bundibugyo virus strain, in India, and the current risk level is considered minimal.

Nevertheless, as a precautionary step, the ministry is enhancing surveillance and preparedness at entry points and within the public health system to facilitate early detection and swift action should any suspected cases arise.

Key measures being implemented include a review of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for screening, surveillance, quarantine, and case management, alongside bolstering laboratory readiness.

The National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune has been designated for testing, with plans to onboard additional laboratories in phases.

Efforts are also being intensified to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to monitor international travel from affected areas.

Authorities are prioritizing the identification and operational readiness of isolation and quarantine facilities at major airports and ports nationwide.

The ministry has urged the public and media to refrain from panic and to avoid spreading unverified information, emphasizing that India's public health system is alert and fully equipped to handle any emerging situations.

Citizens are encouraged to stay updated through official communications from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the WHO.

The government is committed to maintaining close collaboration with international health authorities and will implement all necessary measures to protect public health.
