Dhiraj Bommadevara, Ankita Bhakat, and Jyothi Surekha Vennam are set to represent India in archery at the upcoming Asian Games 2026, which will take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, starting September 19.
The final selection of the 12-member team was confirmed following the last phase of trials conducted at the SAI NCOE in Sonipat, Haryana, aimed at both the Asian Games and World Cup Stages 3 and 4.
According to reports, India has selected three archers each for the men's and women's categories in both recurve and compound disciplines.
In the women's recurve category, Ankita Bhakat and Kumkum Mohod, who recently collaborated to secure a gold medal against China at the Archery World Cup in Shanghai, have made the team. Notably, Olympian Deepika Kumari, who was also part of the gold-winning squad in Shanghai, did not qualify.
Dhiraj Bommadevara will lead the men's recurve team, while experienced archer Atanu Das, who was part of the silver-medal-winning team at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games, also missed out on selection, finishing fourth in the trials.
In the women's compound category, world No. 3 Jyothi Surekha Vennam will lead the team after her impressive performance at the 2023 Asian Games, where she clinched gold in individual, team, and mixed events.
Another significant exclusion is defending Asian Games champion Ojas Deotale, who placed fifth in the selection trials.
India had a successful outing at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games, securing a total of nine medals in archery, which included five golds, two silvers, and two bronzes.
The selected archers will also compete in World Cup Stages 3 and 4, scheduled to be held in Antalya, Turkey, in June and Madrid, Spain, in July.
