Diana donned a custom-made golden saree designed by Manish Malhotra, which captivated onlookers with its luxurious texture and traditional charm. On social media, she referred to her outfit as "Cannes dipped in a little Indian gold."


She elaborated on the inspiration behind her attire, stating, "Wearing a custom knit @manishmalhotra05 saree at the Bharat Pavilion... because in India, gold has always meant more than just color." The saree was beautifully complemented by striking earrings, enhancing her blend of traditional and modern style.

Amma Ariyan's Standing Ovation

The Cannes Film Festival also featured a screening of the restored 4K version of the late filmmaker John Abraham's cult Malayalam film, Amma Ariyan. The event was attended by lead actor Joy Mathew and editor Bina Paul, among others.


The Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), which played a crucial role in restoring this classic, celebrated its fifth consecutive year at Cannes with this film. They shared highlights from the screening on Instagram, noting that it was introduced by Thierry Fremaux, the festival's director, along with FHF director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Joy Mathew, and Bina Paul.


The film received a standing ovation, marking a significant moment as it was the only Indian feature film selected for a world premiere at the prestigious festival this year. FHF noted, "Four decades after its creation, the film that never had a commercial release received a standing ovation at Cannes."


The Story of Amma Ariyan

Set against the backdrop of Kerala's political unrest in the 1970s, Amma Ariyan follows Purushan as he embarks on a journey to inform a mother about her son's death, gathering companions along the way. This narrative intertwines personal and political themes, blending documentary and fiction through a non-linear storytelling approach.


John Abraham, widely recognized as a radical voice in Indian cinema, challenged conventional storytelling and commercial norms to create films that were raw and politically charged. Amma Ariyan was his final work among just four films he directed before his untimely passing in 1987 at the age of 49.
