The Indian team has been announced for one test match and 3 ODI series against Afghanistan. This series will start with the Test match from June 6, immediately after the IPL 2026 season. Some new faces have also been given a chance for both these series and one of them is Gurnoor Brar, who has been selected in Team India for the first time. And that too not only in Test, but he has also been given a chance in the ODI team. But who is Gurnoor and why has he been selected in Team India?

25-year-old Gurnoor Brar is a left-arm fast bowler, who plays in the domestic circuit for the Punjab cricket team. Gurnoor is known for his tall height along with good speed. Gurnoor, who is about 6 feet 5 inches tall, has impressed a lot for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, due to which he has got a chance to play for India A as well. Gurnoor has taken 52 wickets in 18 first class matches at an average of 27, while he has taken 12 wickets in 9 List-A matches.

In fact, his bowling style and his tall height are a big reason for this. Team India has not had any left arm fast bowler in the Test format for a long time. Last time Jaydev Unadkat had performed this responsibility but he could play only a few matches. In such a situation, there is a lack of variation in Team India's bowling, which benefits the batsmen.

Besides, his tall height can also help in this. South African fast bowler Marco Johnson is an example of this, who is a left-arm pacer and creates problems for the batsmen by taking advantage of his tall height. In such a situation, Team India is also trying Gurnoor to give a new look to its bowling attack.

The story of Gurnoor reaching here is also special. In an interview, this bowler from Punjab told that he never wanted to become a cricketer, rather he was more interested in football and tennis. Then at the age of 16, he took this game seriously and tried his hand at bowling. During this time, in a tournament, he met Shubman Gill, who till then was a part of India's Under-19 team. It was Gill who helped him to join the Mohali district team, after which he came to the age group team of Punjab.

After this, the attention of IPL teams also got towards him and he became a net bowler in Punjab Kings. Here he also impressed Shikhar Dhawan with his bowling. Then when Punjab bought Gurnoor in 2023, he also got a chance to play in a match. However, he did not get any wicket and in the next season he remained out due to injury.

After this, on the request of Shubman Gill, he became a net bowler in Gujarat Titans and then the team signed him in 2025. He has not got a chance to play for Gujarat in the last two seasons but now it seems that Gill is very impressed with him and it is on his advice that Gurnoor has got a place in Test and ODI.
