India’s rising food inflation is now affecting another daily essential after milk — bread. Consumers in Mumbai and several other cities are witnessing a sharp increase in bread prices, with some popular variants becoming costlier by up to ₹5 per packet.
The latest price revision has already been implemented by major brands, including “Modern Bread,” from May 16. Industry insiders believe other leading brands may also announce similar hikes soon as production and transportation costs continue to rise.
Bread Prices Increased Across Multiple VariantsRetailers in Mumbai confirmed that several commonly purchased bread products have become more expensive in recent days.
Updated Bread Prices| Sandwich Loaf (400g) | ₹40 | ₹45 |
| Whole Wheat Bread | ₹55 | ₹60 |
| Multigrain Bread | ₹60 | ₹65 |
| Brown Bread | ₹45 | ₹50 |
| Small White Bread | ₹20 | ₹22 |
| Small Brown Bread | ₹28 | ₹30 |
The ₹5 jump is being seen as one of the steepest increases in bread prices in recent years.
Why Are Bread Prices Rising?Bakery owners and manufacturers say the hike is not aimed at increasing profits but has become unavoidable due to multiple cost pressures.
1. Packaging Costs Have IncreasedOne of the biggest reasons behind the hike is the rising cost of packaging materials. The plastic-based packaging used for bread relies heavily on imported raw materials. With the Indian rupee weakening against the US dollar, packaging expenses have surged significantly.
2. Transportation Costs Are RisingThe global fuel crisis and elevated crude oil prices have sharply increased transportation expenses. Since bread is a fast-moving daily product requiring constant delivery, logistics costs directly affect retail prices.
3. Raw Material Prices Continue to ClimbThe prices of key ingredients used in bread production — including flour, salt, preservatives, and commercial LPG cylinders — have also gone up over the past few months.
Small Bakeries Also Under PressureLocal bakery owners say independent bakeries tried to avoid raising prices for as long as possible to retain customers. However, rising labor expenses, gas prices, packaging costs, and delivery charges have made it difficult to continue operations at old rates.
Several bakery businesses fear that if prices continue increasing, consumers may reduce purchases even for basic food items like bread.
Household Budgets Under StressThe latest bread price hike comes at a time when Indian households are already dealing with increasing costs of:
- Milk
- Cooking oil
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Packaged food products
- School snacks and breakfast items
Middle-class families say monthly household budgets are becoming harder to manage as food inflation continues impacting everyday essentials.
Could Prices Rise Further?Market experts believe more packaged food products may witness price hikes if:
- Crude oil prices remain high
- Import costs continue increasing
- The rupee weakens further
- Transportation expenses stay elevated
Consumers may also see additional increases from other leading bread brands in the coming weeks as manufacturers attempt to balance rising operational costs.
