The outcome of Southampton's ongoing Spygate investigation could have substantial implications for Leeds United's transfer plans. The Whites are reportedly targeting Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, with the Championship club understood to be demanding £20million for his services. Hackney is due to enter the final year of his contract, which expires in 2027.
However, any prospective move could very much depend on the judgement delivered to the Saints, who were charged by the EFL for spying on a Middlesbrough training session just two days before the first leg of their play-off semi-final. An independent hearing is currently taking place, with Southampton scheduled to meet Hull City in the Wembley play-off final on Saturday.
Having secured their Premier League survival earlier this month, Leeds will be keen to bolster their squad, though their chase of Hackney could be affected by the decision.
Should Middlesbrough be reinstated into the play-offs and proceed to win promotion, the club may choose to retain their prized asset or attach a considerably steeper price tag on him.
On the other hand, if the commission rules in Southampton's favour, Middlesbrough could find it difficult to keep Hackney and would forfeit much of their negotiating power, potentially leaving Leeds able to secure him for considerably less than the original asking price.
Leeds' return to the Premier League has been a success, with the Whites sitting 14th in the table with just one fixture remaining. Despite looking like nailed-on relegation candidates as recently as March, Farke's side have put together a remarkable eight-match unbeaten run since that point.
Following a 1-0 victory over Brighton, sealed by Dominic Calvert-Lewin's stoppage-time strike, the German boss addressed supporters directly at Elland Road to pay tribute to their unwavering backing.
He also delivered a pointed message to the club's ownership, outlining his vision for Leeds' future.
Farke said: "This game more or less sums up perfectly our whole season. The mentality, spirit and fight in this dressing room is second to none.
"This is why we can celebrate all together today. So thanks a lot for all your support, it is second to none. Just a final promise - I know we have the best fans in this country, it's second to none.
"Right now we are also working to get one of the best teams in this country. Thanks a lot."
Leeds round off their season on Sunday with an away trip to West Ham United, whose own relegation could be rubber-stamped should Tottenham beat Chelsea on Tuesday night.
