Real Madrid are reportedly considering bringing in a high-profile player from Manchester City to address their recent struggles at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Given Manchester City’s wealth of world-class talent, some of Europe’s finest players often find themselves fighting for limited spots in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
In defence, the rise of youngsters Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico O’Reilly this season has been a significant positive for Guardiola. Their performances helped City clinch both domestic cups this term, following their triumph in Saturday’s FA Cup final.
However, this progress has pushed one of City’s key defenders — a vital figure until recently — to the fringes of the squad, making a potential summer exit increasingly likely.
Josko Gvardiol, who joined City for £77 million, has featured only 17 times in the Premier League this season and made just five appearances in the Champions League. The Croatian international has struggled with a persistent shin injury that disrupted much of his campaign.
The 24-year-old was almost ever-present during the 2024/25 season and played a crucial role in helping City secure the Premier League title in 2023/24, contributing with vital goals from defence.
While his signing initially looked like a major success, recurring injuries have become a growing concern for the club.
According to Spanish outlet AS, representatives of Gvardiol have offered the player to Real Madrid as they explore potential options for the defender’s future.
Reports suggest that Gvardiol has been on Real Madrid’s radar “for some time.” The Spanish giants had shown interest in the versatile defender back in 2023 before he chose to join City from RB Leipzig.
With Real Madrid eager to strengthen their backline following a disappointing 2025/26 season in which they failed to win any major trophies, Gvardiol has emerged as a possible target.
However, AS reports that there is currently “no movement towards a transfer,” as the defender remains under contract with Manchester City until 2028.
Gvardiol’s representatives are understood to be “assessing potential destinations” in case he becomes surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium.
In addition, Real Madrid have reportedly also been offered City midfielder Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese playmaker, who has enjoyed a stellar nine-year stint with the club, is expected to leave this summer.
The 31-year-old has allegedly turned down a move to Barcelona, though it remains uncertain whether Real Madrid will pursue negotiations for a possible transfer.
