Liverpool manager Arne Slot is facing mounting pressure at Anfield as uncertainty continues to surround his long-term future at the club.
Despite speculation about his potential departure, reports indicate that Liverpool are planning to retain the Dutch coach for next season, at least for now.
Former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso was reportedly available but has since joined Chelsea, a move that has left many Liverpool fans disappointed and frustrated.
It now appears that the club will stand by Slot for another campaign, especially with the memories of last season’s Premier League title win still relatively recent.
Liverpool’s patience with Slot has been notable, even after he faced public criticism from Mohamed Salah following a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa.
However, according to TEAMtalk, “serious internal discussions” are currently underway within the club after what has been described as a poor title defence.
Salah’s recent comments suggesting that Liverpool should revert to the “heavy metal” football style made famous under Jurgen Klopp have reportedly “prompted significant reflection” among the club’s top executives.
Several Liverpool players supported Salah’s remarks on social media, increasing concerns that Slot may have lost both the dressing room and fanbase support.
The club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, are said to be “concerned” about the mood around Anfield, while football directors Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are said to be “closely monitoring the situation.”
Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League table heading into their final fixture of the season, a home clash with Brentford on Sunday, with their Champions League qualification still uncertain.
The loss to Aston Villa marked their 19th defeat across all competitions this season, and another loss would bring that number to 20 — a figure not seen since the 1992/93 campaign.
The club maintains that an official review of Slot’s position will only take place after the season ends, but confidence in the Dutch manager is said to be fading.
Reports suggest that Liverpool have started assessing alternative managerial options, including Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness, Al-Ahli’s Matthias Jaissle, Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, and Andoni Iraola, who is expected to become a free agent soon.
Iraola is believed to be particularly admired by Liverpool’s hierarchy for his impressive work with Bournemouth and his commitment to a high-energy, pressing style of football.
