Aircraft leasing company BOC Aviation announced on Wednesday that it has signed an agreement to purchase and lease back three additional Boeing 737-8200 aircraft to Akasa Air.

The aircraft, powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines, are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026 and will be operated under long-term lease agreements.

The deal marks the second such transaction between the two companies after a similar agreement announced last year.

Akasa Air, which has been expanding its domestic and international footprint since launching operations in 2022, continues to build its fleet around the Boeing 737 MAX family, particularly the high-density 737-8200 variant.

The aircraft is widely used by low-cost carriers because of its fuel efficiency and lower operating costs.

The latest agreement comes as Indian airlines aggressively add capacity to tap rising passenger demand in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. Aircraft leasing arrangements such as sale-and-leaseback deals have become a common financing route for carriers looking to expand fleets while preserving capital.

Akasa Air said the transaction would support its long-term fleet expansion plans while maintaining financial flexibility. The airline has been steadily increasing aircraft inductions as it competes with larger rivals in India’s crowded aviation sector.

In a statement, BOC Aviation Chief Commercial Officer Paul Kent said the agreement reflects the lessor’s continued support for Akasa’s growth plans in India and overseas markets.

"The Boeing 737-8200 on which it is centering its fleet development remains one of the world’s most popular single-aisle jets, demonstrates industry-leading fuel efficiency and is a cornerstone of our orderbook," he added.
