Casemiro’s remarkable revival at Manchester United this season has been nothing short of exceptional.
Just two years ago, pundit Jamie Carragher had famously criticised Casemiro after a dismal outing against Crystal Palace, suggesting that he should ‘leave football before football leaves him’. Now, as his contract draws to a close, the Brazilian midfielder is indeed bowing out at the top of his game.
Casemiro’s resurgence has been a driving force behind United’s turnaround this season. He transformed a side that finished 15th last campaign into a team that secured third place and a return to the Champions League. His influence has also sparked renewed optimism among betting circles and fans, particularly under the guidance of new manager Michael Carrick.
However, his departure presents a major challenge for United: how do they replace a player of his calibre?
In the latter part of the season, Casemiro built one of the most formidable midfield partnerships in the league alongside Kobbie Mainoo. Under previous boss Ruben Amorim, Mainoo struggled for consistent playing time, but Carrick’s arrival rejuvenated him. The combination of Casemiro’s experience and Mainoo’s youthful energy brought balance and stability to United’s midfield.
Without a solid partner beside him, Mainoo’s effectiveness could decline. Though immensely talented, he tends to be exposed when burdened with extra defensive duties. To unlock his full potential, United must find a top-quality midfielder to complement his style. With Casemiro leaving, a replacement signing is inevitable.
Casemiro’s impact extended beyond defence — his contribution in attack was equally significant. The Brazilian netted a career-high nine goals this season, with eight coming directly from set-pieces. His aerial ability during corners and free kicks has been a crucial weapon, one that will be just as difficult to replace as his defensive prowess.
It is evident that Manchester United will need to enter the transfer market to fill the void left by Casemiro’s exit. Manuel Ugarte has endured another disappointing season and lacks the attributes required to assume Casemiro’s role.
United have been linked with several midfield targets, most of whom carry hefty price tags but could replicate parts of Casemiro’s game.
Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is reportedly high on United’s radar. However, with a valuation of around £100 million and interest from Manchester City, the midfielder currently seems more likely to end up on the blue side of Manchester.
Carlos Baleba, who was strongly connected with United last summer before remaining at Brighton, is another name expected to resurface in the upcoming transfer window, potentially at a more affordable fee.
Additionally, the Red Devils have been linked with Premier League talents such as Adam Wharton and Sandro Tonali, along with Atalanta’s Ederson. Whoever United decide to pursue, it’s clear that significant investment will be required. Replacing Casemiro’s skill, intensity, and leadership will not come cheaply.
