There’s a strange kind of tiredness many women feel at the end of a vacation. Not the kind that comes from sightseeing or long travel days, but the kind that builds quietly from constantly planning, organizing, managing, and taking care of everyone else throughout the trip. The holiday may have been fun, full of good memories and beautiful photos, yet somehow, coming back home still feels exhausting instead of refreshing.
Dr. Chandni Tugnait, MD (A.M), Psychotherapist, Life Alchemist, explains that this feeling is now being called “vacation burnout,” and many women relate to it more than they admit. While vacations are supposed to offer rest and a break from daily life, for many women, the responsibilities simply travel with them. The location changes, but the mental load often does not.
How Does Vacation Burnout Happen? For most families or group trips, vacations do not magically come together on their own. Someone usually has to research destinations, compare hotels, book tickets, make packing lists, organize meals, remember medicines, carry snacks, and think about everyone’s comfort. In many households, that responsibility naturally falls on women.
By the time the holiday actually starts, many women are already mentally exhausted from days or even weeks of preparation. The emotional and mental effort that goes into planning often goes unnoticed because it happens quietly behind the scenes.
Women Often End Up Managing The Vacation Too That Causes Vacation BurnoutThe work usually doesn’t stop once the trip begins. During the vacation, someone still has to keep track of schedules, make sure nobody forgets essentials, handle unexpected problems, manage moods, and keep everything running smoothly.
Whether it is calming tired children, adjusting plans, checking bookings, or making sure everyone is happy, many women continue carrying the role of “manager” even while trying to relax.
This creates a difficult situation where they are technically on holiday but are also constantly working emotionally and mentally at the same time.
The Pressure To Look RelaxedThere is also another layer to vacation burnout that people rarely talk about: the pressure to appear happy and relaxed all the time.
Social media has made vacations look picture-perfect, where everyone is expected to seem rested, grateful, and carefree. Because of this, many women feel uncomfortable admitting that they are overwhelmed or tired during the trip. Instead, they continue smiling through the exhaustion because they do not want to seem negative or ungrateful.
That emotional performance can become tiring on its own.
Real Rest Needs Shared ResponsibilityAccording to Dr. Chandni Tugnait, true rest is not simply about changing locations. Real rest happens when a person is allowed to pause mentally and emotionally, too.
For many women, the habit of constantly anticipating needs and taking care of others does not disappear just because they are staying at a beach resort or travelling to another country. Unless responsibilities are shared properly, vacations can start feeling like everyday life in a prettier setting.
Coming home feeling tired after a holiday does not mean someone is ungrateful or incapable of relaxing. Often, it simply means they were never truly allowed to stop working in the first place. A vacation only becomes restful when the responsibility is shared, not silently carried by one person throughout the trip.
